Book-Lite

Problem Space - Reading in Cars & on Airplanes

People, especially young children, require some form of entertainment during long trips in cars and on planes (or trains, or buses). When these trips go over night, the light required to perform such activities can be bothersome to others in the space, as they try to sleep. Is there a way to make a light-weight, portable, and easy to you light device?

2D & 3D Exploration

Prototype 1 was designed to hang on the back of a seat, with added space inside for small toys, pens, a book, etc.

For Prototype 2, I opted for a sleeker design, that would attach to surfaces via an adhesive strip on the back. It would also be slim enough to be stored by slipping over the cover of a book.

Final Design

Book-Lite is a sleek, portable light designed for use in cars, planes, busses, and other situations where you do not want to both your neighbor. This light opens like a book, with a ratcheting hinge that allows it to hold its position at various angles.

It has a single, soft touch button for on/off operation, and three strips of light to provide adequate, yet targeted lighting. Magnets located on all four corners allow for secure closure, as well as clip-like storage around a book cover. There is a gel-like adhesive strip on the back, allowing Book-Lite to attach to almost any surface.
